Sahu Ramesh Chandra Jain

Sahu Ramesh Chandra Jain was a leading mediaperson, philanthropist, promoter of Indian literature and leader of the worldwide Jain community. He hails from the well known Sahu Jain family of Najibabad (Bijnor District, Uttar Pradesh).

Early Life

He was born on 15 August 1925. His great grandfather Sahu Salekh Chand Jain was a wealthy businessman possessing religious and charitable mind. His grand father was Shri Mussadi Lal. His father Rao Bahadur Jugmundar Das was a leading businessman and landlord in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh who was even honoured by the British. He had his earlier education in Najibabad from where he moved on to study B.Sc. (Industrial Chemistry) at Benaras Hindu University.

Later Life

He was the Executive Director of Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. and the only person to edit both The Times of India and Navbharat Times for many years. He was also the Chairman of Press Trust of India and the Indian Newspaper Society.

A leader of the Jain community, he was revered for his philanthropic nature and devoted services to the cause of Jain religion and society. He was National President of All India Digambar Jain Holy Places Committee and the All India Digambar Jain Parishad, which was founded by his great grandfather.

He died on 22 September 2004.
